Home Sweet School....Already?

My son is only 2 months old and I'm already establishing education in the home. Most moms do this naturally. Your infant is constantly learning and absorbing information. I'm doing it more consciously.

It's nothing major, really. After all, he's only 2 months old! He still spends much of the time sleeping.

I have him watch his Baby Einstein video every other day. I think every day is too much, personally. Plus, I don't want to get into the habit of using the TV set as a babysitter, or needing the TV set to occupy him son. I'd rather cultivate his creativity in occupying himself otherwise. However, Baby Einstein videos are so cute and rather good for his developing mind. He has Baby Neptune right now. The next one I want to get is Baby MacDonald.

At night, I read a book or two to him before leaving him to fall asleep. At first, he fussed because I turned off his turtle (a cribside toy that plays classical music, lights and swimming fish). Now, he seems to like listening to my voice. Dr. Seuss rhymes are good because of the repetition and aliteration.

Still, it IS early to be concentrating on education, but I believe it's good to get into the habit now. Besides, he's growing up so fast! He'll be saying his first words before I know it and by then, I'll really be concentrating on regular home education.

I read to my little guy also. He just turned 5 months old. He also sits with us during all of our Bible times throughout the day. You should see his little face as he watches his brother and sisters go around the table reciting thier Bible verses. He is just enraptured. I also sing songs with him and talk to him telling him different things I am doing. I sit him in his bouncy chair while I do preschool with my younger children, counting, colors, and letters. I figure it cant hurt him. :)
I dont think it is ever too early. As long as it is fun for him and you.
By the way I think it makes a real difference. He has reached every milestone early and the Dr told me the other day he has never seen a more alert or curious five month old. He actually asked me what I do so he can tell other moms.
That sounds a bit hauty doesnt it? Im sorry. Believe me when I say its ALL GOD!! Im just excited to see another mom who spends time "teaching" her baby. :) LOL

May I humbly submit that T.V. at 2 months could be horribly detrimental to your child's development, whether it's Baby Einstein or MTV. His incredibly young eyes need to learn to focus on one thing at a time, for more than a few seconds. T.V. is going to overwhelm him with images and sounds and ideas that not only can he not understand but will harm his learning to read later on, because he has become accustomed to fast paced images instead of never-moving, plain, black-and-white words. I don't say this to be mean or hurtful, so please don't be offended, but the American Pediatric Association doesn't recommend T.V. before the child is two years old. Whether or not you wait until he's two years old is one thing, but at two months I feel you are doing more damage than good. Please consider this advice, dear sister.

Thank you for your post. It seems all at once that I've been hearing/reading about this, and I've decided to hold off on videos for my sweet son.

I found a game that he really likes that we can play together. I lay down with my head propped and my knees up. I sit him up against my thighs and support him with my left hand so we're face to face. Then I point out different parts of my face and name them and then I touch the same feature on his face and name it.

Our daughter was born at 7:17 pm, May 27th after only 2 1/2 hours of labor and 10 minutes of pushing! She weighed in at 6lbs 5 ounces and measured at 19 inches long....another little peanut! I'm sorry, but I just have to gripe...

What is it with this trend of calling women "Miss" and their first name? I really dislike being called "Miss Kate." First of all, I am NOT a "Miss" and secondly, Kate is my familiar nickname. I am very proudly Mrs. Scott. Calling me Mrs. Scott does not make me feel old or detached. On the other hand, "Miss Kate" makes me sound like a child and lowered in societal and respectable standards rather than the married mother that I am. I don't want to be called Miss Kate, nor do I want my children to address adult women in that manner. Which brings up another point; men don't receive that kind of watered down respect. They get addressed properly as Mr. Smith, not Mr. John. Unfortunately, the three greatest offenders are a close friend, my sister-in-law, and my church.
