Invest in Storage

Usually, minimalists and minimizers (people who reduce their possessions, but aren't necessarily minimalists) discourage the use of storage units.  It seems counter-productive to the whole concept of minimizing.

I offer a different perspective.

Especially for those who have larger families in a smaller home, and/or for those who have a spouse who isn't very keen on getting rid of stuff.

Invest in a storage unit!

Whether it is a shed in the backyard or an actual rented unit, it is worth the investment.

Why?

Because the more you keep out of your home, the better.
Better health
Better organization
Better cleaning

For example, I keep the bulk of my kids' toys in the shed.  If they want to play blocks they have to pack up the toy soldiers.  Then, I move the tote of soldiers to the shed and bring the blocks in the house.  This not only clears up space, but prevents my kids from dumping and mixing toys into a huge mess.  Remember, if they can't clean it, they can't keep it.

It's ok to love seasonal décor, but it is best to keep it out of the house.

Speaking of seasonal, I live where we have 4 seasons, so that does mean different stuff for different seasons, especially clothes and toys/gear.  So, I do need storage for that rotation.

It's ok to keep memories, but make a time capsule in a tote in your shed rather than wadding it into the back of the closet to create a zone for mildew to grow.

We aren't all willing to get rid of the vast majority of our stuff.  Just be careful not to let the storage unit become an excuse to hoard elsewhere.  It is meant for organizing and storing joy-bringing items that don't need to be kept in the home at all times.

It's ok to have a storage unit of some sort.

Just don't let it be your home.
